SoHo

The neighborhood with a distinctive nickname, SoHo stands for its location ‘SOuth of HOuston’. Orginally an manufacturing district known as The Cast Iron District, SoHo’s large industrial buildings retain the distinct cast iron architecture of the early 19th-century. As manufacturing moved out of the neighborhood in the 1970’s, the deserted buildings of the Cast Iron district were taken over by artists because of the cheap rents and large open spaces. An art colony soon evolved and the neighborhood attracted a diverse group of residents, as well as high-end boutiques and restaurants. The neighborhood’s popularity has increased dramatically since it was designated as a historic district and SoHo has become one of NYC’s most well known and prestegious neighborhoods, filled with cutting edge design, cuisine and leisure.
